Turnout for children with cerebral palsy (CP)

Turnout for children with cerebral palsy (CP)

The basic premise of the turnout for children with cerebral palsy is a holistic approach to the needs of the young patient. In accordance with András Petö's idea that the child is an inseparable physical, intellectual and emotional whole, we undertake therapeutic activities aimed at all these areas. We pay attention to improving the child's functioning at the level of large and small motor skills, strengthen his self-confidence and independence through self-care exercises, but also facilitate the expression of his own needs by working on communication with the environment. After an exhausting day of activities, we take care of emotional well-being through the joy of sensory play in our World Experience Room.

The turnout is dedicated to children:

  • with cerebral palsy regardless of GMFCS (Gross Motor Function Classification System) functioning level.

We begin the turnaround with a thorough assessment of the child's major needs in large motor, small motor, self-care, and speech and cognitive functions. We conduct a thorough interview with the parent about the child's greatest limitations and ask about their expectations. We conduct functional tests dedicated to the young patient in the areas of self-care activities, GMFM (Gross Motor Function Measure) assessment, clinical observation with Sensory Integration and speech therapy. Based on the information gathered, we set therapeutic goals using the Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS).

Our turn is mainly based on NDT-Bobath work, where our physiotherapists work with the patient with specially adapted aids and proprioceptive stimulation techniques. In the next part, our patient works with a speech therapist or neurologist, as needed, on speech, alternative communication or on improving eating. In the last part, we focus on self-care training adapted to the patient's needs and spend time on therapy - polysensory play in the World Experience Room. There our client gets the opportunity to rest, relax, but also to play creatively with multisensory experience under the control of an SI therapist.

Benefits for the child of participating in the turnout:

  • improving postural and motor control;
  • normalization of muscle tone;
  • improvement of balance reactions;
  • increased range of motion in joints;
  • improvement in perception and integration of sensory stimuli;
  • increased independence and participation in daily life;
  • improvement in fine motor skills (grip strength and quality);
  • improvement of functions affecting speech development (memory, concentration, auditory perception, visual perception, motor perception and thinking);
  • improvement of orofacial functions;
  • development of communication skills (verbal or alternative);
  • development of linguistic competence, in terms of active or passive speech;
  • selection or suggestion of individually adapted orthopedic supplies or mobility equipment.
